Today, I’d like to introduce you to one of my Instagram friends. We’ve never met in real life, but I was so impressed with her story when she shared it on IG, I asked to share it with you.
I love that her story includes backtracking without giving up; that she kept trying till she found what worked. And of course, that she’s discovered how great it feels when you eat real food!
Here’s her story in her own words:
For roughly 40 years (maybe longer) I’ve had a very unhealthy relationship.
A relationship with food — and my weight.
Many years of large weight gains and losses contributed to my unhealthy self! In September of 2013, after a small scare with early stage breast cancer, I took a cold, hard look at exactly what I was putting into my body each day. I did a lot of self-reflection and research.
This led me to experiment with eliminating grains from my life. It felt great! The pounds came off, but I still felt tied to the scale — every morning and at bedtime as well. Then I tried the Paleo Diet. [In addition to sugar and wheat, Paleo eliminates all dairy, all grains, and legumes/beans.] My weight stayed the same but, WOW, I felt so good — no more bloating! And I felt good almost all the time.
(Whole30 is not a weight loss plan. It’s a get healthy plan.)
But then I told myself I could have cheese, dairy and rice, not realizing that, for me, those foods are triggers to over-indulge.
In January of 2016, I completed a Whole30! [30 days of strict Paleo.] I learned a LOT about my personal food triggers. It was a hard month, but I got through it. Then I spent a few months experimenting on different ways of eating: vegetarian being one, Keto another. Apparently, I didn’t learn everything I had hoped during my first Whole30, because I went too far into dairy world and made myself sick!
So I started Whole30 Round 2 on October 6, 2016.
My best non-scale victory: My clothes fit better! I wasn’t trying to lose weight, and I think I may have lost a few pounds, but I wasn’t about to step on the scale because that was not why I did this round.
The 2016 holiday season was a tough one. Family issues and past ghosts appeared, and I dealt with it by eating, eating, eating. Mostly good, clean food, but LOADS of it. And chocolate. Yes… chocolate.
I’m looking forward to my healthier relationship with food, because — God knows — it’s been a bad relationship for over 40 years!
I started Round 3 Whole30 in January 2017. It may be longer than 30 days this time. I love how eating this way makes me feel!
